The Salem witch trials followed several centuries of witch trials in Europe in which approximately 40,000 people (mostly women) were accused of being witches. The beginnings of witch trials are a surprising mix of religion, politics and culture that ended with tragic results. The second most popular book in the 16th century was a road map to rooting out witches hiding in plain sight! Sarah Sullivan Department Chair and Instructor at McHenry County College will explain the roots of witchcraft, how those accused of witchcraft fared and why it appeared in New England.
